Oliver's Golden Age of Music Contest ~ 2/21/25

Two decades of music were known as the golden age.
It was all the rage, the era from the 50s through the 70s
Motown, Rock and Roll, and Blues that touched my heart.
Listening to them always start nostalgic memories flowing.
I'll take a seat next to Otis, sitting on the Dock of the Bay,
listening to Percy sing about a man who loves his woman.
I recall women begging Phil and Don Everly, Let it Be Me,
but in each city, they found themselves singing, Bye, Bye Love.
I sighed at the velvety voice of Johnny Mathis crooning 'Misty,'
making my eyes mist with tears from his The Twelfth of Never.
Elvis was called 'The King' whose gyrations had eyes rollin' but
not like the Stone's hit, Satisfaction and Mick Jagger's full lips.
The Platter's Great Pretender and Elvis' Love Me Tender...
Yes, I'm sure you can see by now that I'm a romantic,
sighing over Nat King Cole's When I Fall in Love
and Bobby Darrin not wanting to dream all alone,
desiring the closeness he shared with his Dream Lover.
I love the sexy sound of a saxophone and soulful blues
of Sam and Dave's, Soul Man and Hold On, I'm Comin'.
Thrilled by B.B. King's The Thrill is Gone, but it never is.
Aretha's 'Natural Woman' was sung from deep in her heart
and from the deep voice of Ray Charles', Cryin' Time Again.
Men in groups recorded songs that remain classics today...
My Girl by The Temptations, written by Smokey Robinson.
It wasn't Just My Imagination music in those days was special.
Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons... Rag Doll and Let's Hang On
It was the days of Doo Wop and Bowzer's baritone in Sha Na Na.
Fats Domino's Walkin to New Orleans, a hit from my hometown.
Trying to hit high notes of the Righteous Bros., Unchained Melody
and shedding a few tears to Jackie Wilson's Lonely Teardrops.
Diana Ross and the Supremes topped the charts for years...
Some Day We'll Be Together, but she went out on her own.
Time spent California Dreamin' with the Mamas and the Popas.
Then the invasion of the insects, adoringly called The Beatles.
Hey Jude, Yesterday, Imagine.... I can't imagine the music world
without the many songs they wrote... all treasured melodies.
Not a Wild Child, but loved Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven
and Dionne Warwick singing, I'll Never Fall in Love Again.
SO many songs to love... These Eyes, Jr. Walker and the Allstars,
Joe Cocker's raspy voice in With a Little Help From My Friends.
The Band came to mind as I recalled a day spent in Cripple Creek.
Greats by The 5th Dimension and CCC's Who'll Stop the Rain.
I could never resist singing Bridge Over Troubled Water
by Simon and Garfunkel and how remiss was I to not mention
one my faves from the Fab Four: Let it Be. Gotta fit in Michael
and his Jackson Brothers, He's A Spirit in the Sky... Greenbaum.
Putting down my pen, leaving the keyboard like dropping a mic
after reminiscing over the era's oldies but goodies. All of these
artists and more have left indelible memories in us. We can't forget
lyrics to those special songs that we fell in love to, broke up to,
or had us Dancing in the street... Martha and the Vandellas 1964!
