even her name evoked colorful images Ginger November, a student of mine quiet girl with ebony hair a blessing to teach till family troubles intervened divorcing parents of a Catholic schoolgirl Ginger tried to keep the burden hid enduring much hardship struggling to cope mid-semester exams evoked fear to avoid failure, students had to pass no student could copy another’s work four different tests I’d prepared quietly, I patrolled each aisle students barely knew I was there from behind I approached Ginger’s desk to find her checking notes in her sleeve if I’d adhered to rules Ginger would not have graduated this thought I couldn’t bear knowing her hardships at home “You cannot get an A,” I said after class “but return here after school” at three p.m. she slowly entered shame clouding the beauty of her face a different version of the test I handed her “If you pass, you’ll get a 70; when averaged with your other grades, you can still make a ‘C’” this “A” student earned her “C” but cried while retaking the test other teachers might have let her fail I thought she needed support for Ginger I broke the rules knowing the pain she carried what I did was surely wrong but a second chance I felt she deserved January 16, 2019 For Chantelle Anne Cook's "Second Chances"

Situation ethics is a never ending source of poetic prompts. Your heart felt incident attests to that. A Catholic school teacher with compassion, who could still exact some principle in such a situation, rare indeed. It's one of the traits that makes you a fine poet. Compassion and the awareness to touch other souls. Congrats.

Just as you 'saved' Ginger, Mr. Kron, my High School Acting Teacher, saved me. He intervened for me in a meaningful way, and wrote some words in my yearbook, that I memorized. His words saved my life. You may never know, how much great good, you did for her! Also, beautifully told. A FAVE for me!

Hi Carolyn, you have a beautiful heart. As you say, many would have failed the student. It never hurts to give a second chance. I love the content of this write Carolyn. Not many people would have given this second chance. It would be a fail. I admire you for your action. You did the correct thing, at least I think so. This was a very special act from a special person. A fave. Have a wonderful Friday. Hugs....Mike. XX

She was a good student in all other respects and only months from graduating high school. By then her college scholarship had been secured and I didn't want this painful period in her life to jeopardize her future.

Luckily, she was a student capable of learning from her mistakes; many given "a break" quickly develop an attitude that the world owes them a living. Well said! Aloha! Rico

She deserved a break, Rico. She had always been a respectful student who studied hard and earned good grades. She'd only made this one mistake and I understood it came from troubles at home.

What an amazing thing you did Carolyn. She was at a low ebb in her life and you threw her a lifeline. We all need a second chance in our lives sometimes. Good luck. Tom.

I think it hurt me as much as her when I caught her cheating, Tom. No one else at the school ever knew about this and I did pray for guidance in handling it. Thanks for reading, Tom

Thanks for participating in the contest, Nette! And also thanks for letting me know that other teachers encounter similar problems. This girl did not deserve to be left back.

wow, I LOVE this. As a teacher I have done similar things, Carolyn. I do not like a stern "it has to be this way or nothing" approach in life. Excellent way to do this challenge. And thanks so much for my placement in your contest. I can't wait to see the beautiful prize!

She will remember this for the rest of her life..regretfully. But she will remember you as a special person for giving her a second chance. A worthy example..your poem is.

She was dealing with problems at home and I just didn't want her not to graduate. Thanks for reading, Vijay.
