Frozen Blossom

May’s blossom on the bush was my delight.
Her birth came soonest of all the flowers’.
When was it that she first beheld sun’s light?
Did it fall on her in dawn’s first hours?
I wonder how she felt when sudden rain
fell, pounding her before her blossoming,
and did she know how short would be her reign
once she’d emerged to greet the world in spring?
An unexpected snowfall came one day
before her sister roses could join her.
How strange it was to have that freeze in May.
I could almost hear it – her silent brrr -
as she – poor, frozen blossom in the snow -
no more would feel her rosy life force flow.

It is a pain to see flowers blighted by adverse weather, a frost or rain and withering away before they could flash their beauty before the world. Beautifully written sonnet. Congratulations dear Andrea on your win.

You took your flower to her demise! … How strange it was to have that freeze in May. I could almost hear it – her silent brrr - as she – poor, frozen blossom in the snow…love, especially, those line! Congrats!

outstanding and beautifully written ... struck a chord with me. I sometimes think flowers cry when a late spring freeze arrives.

I really like this contest entry, and it reads like a good contender to me. I like the personification of the blossom. We have had some very up and down weather this spring but with each twist, I have been blessed. Thank you for sharing this one with us. Sara K

Oh my, sweet and sad! I have noticed a few chillier days here in the desert, I would hate to have snow in May! I have been actually thinking about planting my flower garden this year, to lose them to snow would break my heart!

Great personification! Fortunately they are a group soul. Each is eternal in the seasons. My Lincoln Rose is blooming now...out near the street on my property. A joy to see so many stop, in their morning walks, and admire and sniff.

Very nicely done. I see you did another beautiful sonnet and as usual the pictures it invokes are quite vivid. I've a surprise for you I have entered this contest as well but using the other title "With Fingers Crossed" and of course it's a Pantoum If I don't win, I hope you do
