Friday Changes

The forty-hour work week
kept same its firm streak,
but aging held a revealing
of different Friday feelings.
Beginning work at eighteen,
Monday became a wait thing,
a crawl to Friday night’s scene
when I was up for any
of mostly everything
with little sleep in between.
Even when newlywed, Friday
eve fun was weekend spread.

Then came baby, mortgage
a freedom shortage,
endless yardage, garbage,
cleaning and laundry bondage –
all with no rules or stoppage.
Friday lost all past flare
as my present life tone
shone it as a day for prayer:
that once I got home
I would be left alone
to merge in silence rare
with my reclining chair.

Back with my congrats. And I love the alliteration in the title, CayCay. (I am from Canada - feels like we live in igloos, year-round it feels today)

I love the contrast you so wonderfully express in your wonderful rhyming poem, CayCay! I can identify with your feelings so much way back when I was on that treadmill too. Congratulations on your fine win! Hugs, Sandra

I can relate, CayCay, since quitting work to be a carer, every day is the same. A fine write, good luck ! Viv x

The more sameness - the more years fly so it is a good thing you've shaken up life by becoming a furniture builder and cat entertainer. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

I'd like to retire, but I doubt that will ever happen. Good luck with the contest.

A perfect description of how our Fridays change as responsibility engulfs our lives. GL in the contest, CayCay. And, I love the title.

Hey, cutie - I spoke Friday truth as I have known it! Unless it is a three-day weekend when you're a Mom and homemaker, there truly isn't much downtime. Reading Erma Bombeck used to help me a lot, she was so darned funny. Good to see you ... CayCay

I love your poem, CayCay. And like most people, can totally relate. Now retired, weekends are when I fight to stay indoors.

It is true, isn't it? When kids come, it is like, 'what weekend? oh, laundry, grocery shopping, cleaning - yepper, had a blast with all that and I'm thoroughly rested!' Sometimes I think I may have manifested my own disability by resenting the clock up my %$^ for so many years! Anyway, hears to humor - especially when shared. Poetry hugs ... CayCay (r u in US, somewhere warm?)

Hey, Sweetie - good to see you especially because life has been so roughly hectic as of late that I feel I've let you down. I have numerous super hero undies that I've made sure to adorn each day, but, sadly, life has still been a soap opera on a Friday cliffhanger. Don't give up on me, that's my job, k? Like it or not, I'm imagining you with a smile. Hugs ... CayCay

I can so relate to this poem. Most Friday evenings I fight to stay awake past 9:00 pm. I enjoyed this poem. Have a great day! :)

Can't tell you how many times on a Friday night I couldn't even gather the strength to wash off my mascara. It's bad enough that my energy peaked one month in my 30s and its been a push since! Glad you related, I'm enjoying the comedy on this page. Take good care, Sweetie ... CayCay
