Forsythia
FORSYTHIA II
Jostling with ubiquitous crocuses
First leaves in forest, farm, or home
First greens of spring reveal
The most eager petals I know -
My springtime “friend” uplifts me
with myriad-sunned, golden yellows.
Early summer heat will bring larger leaves around us
And green will overwhelm my favorite firsts
My yellow bush fires: my yellow suns alas!
Will be swallowed by green sea monsters
How I wish forsythia will bloom all year long
My heart skips beats, my face smiles all day long
The power is thine; yellow-power like sunshine
As tiny burning bushes bombard me
with buttery bombs of joy
Forsythia, Forsythia, I sing as if to my beloved
Forsythia, Forsythia, small, bright, sun-colored
How could I fall in love with one sidelined to hedgerows
So long as Spring swings around, my admiration grows.
