Forgiveness

You asked me to forgive you
Still you would cause me pain again
Your words rained down like daggers
Soaking my soul with so much pain

I know i was taught to forgive
It became harder every day
All the ways you had to hurt me
I was the game you loved to play

You had quite an imagination
The ways you would describe my demise
Thankfully I chose not to follow
Yours was a pathway paved with lies

In my mind I reinvented
Chose a future that was worthwhile
Yes I took a few steps backwards
Still moving forward all the while

As the gap between us lengthened
God took my heart and made it whole
Yes beginnings are important
I learned forgiveness plays a role

It was not so much about you
Or all the things that you had done
My healing could not be complete
Without knowing God's only Son

There is light beyond the darkness
Perhaps one day I will see your face
I hope you asked God for forgiveness
Your sins will be gone without a trace

If my Savior can forgive you
The way he has forgiven me
There is more to who you were
Than what I was able to see

I forgive you dad

Truly a masterpiece, Richard. It left me in awe. The tender humanity and graceful truths expressed are breathtaking as penned by a skillful poet who has mastered his craft well. Kudos, my friend. That was an uplifting Sunday morning read. Much love to you. RW

A very well penned poem.( Forgiveness makes you even more powerful and less vulnerable. You forget your sufferings only after forgiving otherwise they haunt around you.) Keep smiling always...

I am glad you found the power of forgiveness. It frees us, releases the chains that hold us to the past. Your heart is too big to be bound. Love it!

Powerful message Forgive , trust in God, not many can apply to that, and others can find peace with forgiveness and fate. Pain and hurt, and you forgiving your dad, the chapter is closed to move forward, I personally can relate to that in some way. Beautiful...

Richard, wonderful poem. A wonderful guiding principle for life...forgive others for God has forgiven me. My sins put Him on the cross.

We often forget how personally we are involved, we tend to think about others sin and forget that he personally died and suffered for our transgressions. Thanks for this wonderful comment.

God has given you many blessings Maybe the greatest has been to have the ability to forgive Dad even in absentia for his many hurts that he caused. You have such a wonderful heart. God loves you as I do Mom/Mamabear

I have thought long and hard about the subject you raise here. I have hurt many people and have been hurt by many people as well. And I have come to realize that "I am sorry" does not work. At least not right away. We must wait until the scar has faded. And then say "I am sorry". Only then can we truly grant "Forgiveness". Like you my father hurt me. He is no longer with us. But if he were I would forgive him. For the scars have faded. And I know he loved me.Thank u 4 this lovely thought.

I believe forgiveness is more of a gift to ourselves and with it God purifies our spirit and in the process provides us a glimpse of his own heart.

Hello Richard, your ability to write and have the reader feel like they are in your shoes is amazing. I am not always so good at compliments, but this poem is a gem and for so many reasons. There are a few messages here, and the way you tell a story, its heartwarming, it shows that good can come from all things, aside from a great poet, you are a kind wise person.

Oh, it all starts with forgiveness and letting go. You will see. You will yourself with new things, new replacements to take the place of the old hurts. Truly now you can be whole. Great poem, Rick!
