Notes About The Poem

For the E Form - Elegy Poetry Contest of Constance La France

For Long-gone Days

"Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay."- Robert Frost For long-gone days of my youth I lament. Decades of gold – how quickly they were spent! And now the autumn’s chill has taken hold. The grip it has on me can’t be controlled. Florescent spring, when sunshine kissed my face - oh, the many dreams I used to embrace. Innocent was I, thinking I knew of truth in that sweet, fresh blossoming of my youth. Joyous moments I collected have blurred; their melody rallentando I’ve heard. A rose on fall’s hedge, I will wilt away, joining lost loved ones some glorious day.

Andrea, wise you are to confront this subject. It's difficult for many to contemplate what happens to us. It seemed so far away years ago, but not any more. Every time has its excitements and challenges. I find it a pleasure to watch and deal with, and I just hope to be comfortable and with it till the end. We also have a responsibility to leave our world habitable and sound for future generations. I'm less confident of that.

A truth in afraid we all face at some point although to grow older is to grow wiser. I remember how much respect our elders were shown when I was young. It seems that is also gone to the past. Leviticus 19:32 Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD Proverbs 16:31 The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness. Sadly the modern times do not honor the old and infirm like they used to. Even though I feel wiser, I do not like some of the new and weird stuff that has happened to me!

“their melody rallentando I’ve heard“ - what a brilliant line, Andrea! I understand the lament. I miss sitting around with grandparents, some Aunts, Uncles, cousins, etc.. We wait for our turn to join them, not wanting to hurry that but still missing them so much. I miss my mom especially. Hugs and Congrats, dear one!

Wow this is brilliant and the cadence of your lines truly is captivating and soulfully moving. Do we need to rhyme in elegies? I think iv read two rhymed. I cant rhyme with a migraine haha. You did amazing! “ oh, the many dreams I used to embrace. Innocent was I, thinking I knew of truth” love how youv phrased that!! This is impeccable! Im sure a top winner too! Best wishes

Yes, the inevitable. I try not to focus on such things, but the aches and pains, and lack of energy is a stinker. I hear you. Well said.

For me, it's the strange things that happened to me after an oncologist prescribed prolia for my bones. My energy is good but I am now always miserable due to the very rare effects Prolia gave me. 8 years and still won't go away.

Lovely piece dear Andrea. we all have to go through this very cycle of life and growth. It comes so fast and wished we had more time. That is why it is important to live life and create good memories. It is the memories that would keep us and make us feel okay. When we look at them, we remember our happiness and how we did try to live life to its fullness. It shows us how much we have grown.

Reads like a good contender to me for Constance's contest. Way to go. How fast youth is spent, those middle years how they went, then came old age and slowly it flows, but how each day we quietly hold. Thanks for sharing your talent with us and for dropping by my page. Sara K
