First Recital
Cherubic face focused intently on her task
Nervous tongue flicking across dry lips
Her tiny hands leaping across the keys
While her feet dangled above the pedals.
Her tulle-faced dress meticulously sewn
Bright patent leather-strapped shiny sandals
Pink socks with white lace carefully folded over
Long blonde braids secured with small satin bows.
The ornamental piece was flawlessly performed
Obligatory bow taken, quickly she dashed away
Embarrassed, it seemed, to have the attention
My six-year-old granddaughter’s first recital.
