Fireflies

Day puts on its dusky cloak, As phosphorescent fireflies, Like sunlit diamonds flash, And circle beneath broad oaks. Lovely little lanterns Fly freely to and fro Winking, blinking, twinkling As on and off they go. Many settle on the boughs, To flash their mates below, Lighting trees recurrently With their luminescent glow. Pulsing on, pulsing off My heart beats to their light With thoughts of love for you For whom I’ll pray this night.
