Filling Up On Empty

Some things that look fulfilling
Can cast a woeful spell
Glittery that looks like heaven,
can often turn out to be hell.

All the wanting leads to weeping,
He can't fill that empty space.
There are those hidden bits of lonely,
in the mirror etched upon his face.

He exchanges real for imagined,
relation-ships they sail away.
Nights are now spent with strangers,
He is the game they like to play.

Trappings of success are empty,
he pretends he's not alone.
The heart in his chest is heavy,
What was soft has turned into stone.

It can be the curse of the rich man,
to grab onto things that don't last.
Riches that vanish in an instant,
Replaced with regrets from the past.

I really enjoyed the topic, imagery, and the words that flow so well together. I was drawn in how in reading, that one feels the emotions of the protagonist, and even though he has chosen an empty path, that one feels empathy for him.

Glad to have found this fine poem my friend. You nailed it in sweet verse. Greed is a curse. Yet seems human nature breeds greediness and always wanting more.. A7

Richard, this happens when man is consumed with earthly things and be only contented with "short term happiness"... Your poem, including its title conveys vivid images. Your words are descriptive and evoke a passionate response from the reader. I appreciated the different poetic devices you used. The allegory in the first stanza; the analogy in the second stanza; the conflict in your third stanza; the antithesis in the fourth stanza; the characterization in your last stanza. The symmetry and rhythmic flow of your poem is an emotional and enjoyable experience for the reader. I saw no errors. Thank you.

The last stanza is my fave,it simply says it exactly the way it is; when the fictious riches are gone, regrets from past will just replace them. Well done Richard and congrats for being selected as the POTD...hugs

I don`t want to die rich, that would make me very poor. Richard ,in my childhood I belinged to the middle class (rhe lower middle class)..Since I grew up ..I worked hard and now belong to the upper middle class financially..but believe. me ...Fulfillment lies not in riches but in unity with those you love..The worst days when money was little .were indeed the best days, that now money cant buy. Great message.
