Feral Dogs

Their hearing’s sharp; their eyes are keen. They lurk in shadows; rarely seen. The hunt goes on; but lose the fight, against these killers of the night. The traps are set; the bait is scent, one tiny flaw, and hope is spent. Their cunning mind, brings hope unstuck; a hunters guile needs more than luck.

Hello Andrea … and to think a brother or sister of a feral dog could be curled up in front of a fire and loved immensely. Through instinct, hunger drives these dogs into survival mode - thank you Andrea

Hello Jennifer … so cunning they are Jennifer. Some trappers use the urine of dogs on heat to sprinkle around baits or traps. They nearly rival some of Africa's predators. Thanks Jennifer - Lindsay

Aren’t we supposed to let them lie? Oops I guess that was sleeping dogs *lol*. I am thankful we don’t have this problem in Canada.

Hello Richard … feral animals are a massive problem in Australia, especially feral cats and dogs with native fauna. Domestic dogs turned feral are sheep owners worst nightmare. A pack of cunning feral dogs may kill 2-300 sheep in one night - thank you Richard - Lindsay

Society befriend these animals, then abandon them. Just another '*Brick in the wall' Lindsay, an excuse to kill. Love your poetry, the way it is, has been and will be. *Pink Floyd

Thank you once again Connie … the dingo copped a lot of the blame for the destruction of sheep, but it the dog/dingo cross that is much more dangerous in every way. It's correct what you wrote. It is a natural instinct to kill - thank you Connie - Lindsay

Thank you Judy … a pack of dogs can be extremely dangerous and are destructive to farm animals. Trappers are employed to destroy them, but the slightest scent of a human at a bait station will mean no luck. They are so cunning and untrusting - thank you Judy - Lindsay

G'day Gershon … thanks again. There is even a fence built in outback Australia to prevent dog movement and protects the flocks of sheep from being decimated. In the outback, the worst are dingo/large dog crosses. Very dangerous animals indeed - thank you Gershon - Lindsay

Feral dogs spread leptospirosis and rabies, and cats spread toxoplasmosis, causing birth defects in humans as well as Endangered Species, yet those who abandoned their pets continue insisting it is inhumane to destroy them. There are several MILLION feral cats on one island in Hawai'i, that could feed several million starving children in refugee camps, but our Legislature won't even consider it! Thanks for bring up the subject, Lindsay! Aloha! Rico

Hello Rico … Australia has a real problem with feral animals with cats, foxes, dogs, dingo cross domestic dogs, pigs, brumbies, deer, and camels just to name a few. Agencies just tread water trying to control them. I forgot; rabbits sometimes build up to enormous numbers - thanks Rico - Lindsay

G'day Tom … the feral dog can be a real danger to humans, but it can be pet dogs in towns that are not secured at night can be worse than ever for a farmer. They kill for the sake of killing - thank you Tom - Lindsay
