Often the kind of person we grow up to be is caused by the things we experience as we are growing up. Most youngsters go through a rebellious stage but with patience and training they usually grow into responsible adults. Environment has a lot to do with it. Remember: Your kids usually let your words go in one ear and out the other but the things they see you do are remembered.

The feeling that we're being watched, Causes fear and agitation. The feeling that we're being judged, Causes anger, aggravation. The feeling that we are unloved, Can make one's heart grow hard. The feeling all is not secure, Will put one on one's guard. Sometimes these feelings have no ground, It all is in our mind. The mind is like a sapling tree, That's bent and shaped o'er time. Careful pruning,loving care, Will shape the way it grows. Patience, careful training, time, Will teach it what it knows. It takes time to grow a tree, Into a thing of beauty. A mind's a shameful thing to waste, To teach, a sacred duty.

Beautifully imaged piece of poetry. Great metaphor too and so true; people are a lot like trees.

It is a sacred trust to raise a child. Sadly many do not take it seriously. The best gift we can give our children is time. Yes they are watching and one day we will want them to spend time with us. Your piece brought to mind “Cat in The Cradle”.
