Fading Summer

Spring, always
just a few weeks away.
Dark branches begin to bud wet
I knew you couldn't stay.

How I remember our first Fall,
and the long Winter most of all.

I must make amends and start again,
isn't it funny how love resets.
Wi' misty hands of time
we're bound to forget,
our fading summer.

Hi Paige, Thank you for this, I was very surprised as you could imagine. Some days seems you throw every line in the water and get only a few nibbles. Then on a rare cast you reel in a whopper on Mister Ronco's Pocket Fisherman, it's crazy. -Richard

This is fabulous Richard. Our love, no matter how new or old begins to fade away without the hope of Spring. Congratulations! :)

' Spring, I knew you couldn't stay. ' So true, because with seasons, they are here one moment and then gone the next. Life is the same. Cherish each moment, and embrace the beauty of every season. Congratulations Quoth Theraven, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. Hugs, Brandy

Hi Daniel, Thank you for this eye catching comment. "the strange mercy of forgetting" I think I could get used to that. On thr subject of memory, I read that Egyptians believed that a person dies twice: once when their physical body dies and again when their name is spoken for the last time. -Richard

Kim, Thank you for this comment. Since I am a Dad (love how you capitalized) I'm a bit curious about those seasons. Perhaps I'll find the answer in your poems. Like the poem "Those We Love". At the end of the day we only have each other. -Richard

Hello Regina, Thank you for your comment. In reply to Andrea I mentioned; always other wonderful poems waiting their day. Your poem "Fear Is Gone" is one of them. Hate to fall down the rabbit hole of leaving comments. I never left one for you. Of course I can fix this. But I also want to share this POTD with yours. May God bless you too. -Richard

Hi Sara, Thank you for the comment. I've watched with much interest your poetry's meteoric rise on PoetrySoup. Feel this second day of Autumn is a lucky one, for no other reason than you never know if it's your last. Sorry for being so chatty. Similar to my comment to Tania - "Every dog has its..." And I hope this one is good to you. -Richard

- Spring is always a new beginning ... after a long cold winter - Summer is the shortest time (in Norway) ... with a "puff" it is gone ... autumn brings rain, wind and bare trees ... not as beautiful as we write about ... the night frost is here already, Richard - Congratulations on your p.o.t.d. ... enjoy :) - hugs

Hello Anne-Lise, Thank you, fond memories of that frost. Though not of the Boreal forests of Norway. Maybe someday... Fall and Winter are great teachers. Can't help but feel a little sadness for those who live in other latitudes where seasons rarely change. -Richard

Hi Andrea, Big thank you first, this poem was hurried, I'm sure you can tell. But I had nothing else to give, maybe you can relate. I'm just as sure someone else worked very hard to tell a story through wonderful poetry and is probably more deserving. But there's absolutely a reason to the rhyme. -Richard

I don't even know why, but I really like this and after I post this comment, I am going to study it a bit because 'something' sure enough, heart-hit me. Between the brevity and vagueness is something concrete and complicated.

Hi CayCay, Thank you for this and you're right. Poetry comes from someplace and much of mine of late; giving individuals a voice who can no longer speak for themselves. This poem is a poor attempt to begin to tell the story of a young woman who died in 2023. She was laid to rest in an ancient graveyard not far from the Danube River. -Richard
