Even True Love Cannot Stay
First blush of love is bright,
A fragile, tender light.
A whispered, hopeful start;
Held closely in the heart.
Then comfort settles deep,
While early passions sleep.
So vibrant hues give way,
And first love cannot stay.
The fervent vows we make,
For constancy's dear sake.
A promise pure and bold;
A story to unfold.
Then life's own seasons turn,
And different lessons learn.
So youthful dreams decay,
And first love cannot stay.
Though ardor may decline,
A deeper bond can twine.
A knowing, gentle grace;
Etched softly on each face.
But time, with silent hand,
Will shift the shifting sand.
So earthly ties give way,
And even true love cannot stay.
The purest hearts may yearn,
A timeless truth to learn.
That every precious art;
Must someday fall apart.
So mortal bonds release,
And find a different peace.
So earthly forms decay,
And even true love cannot stay.
