Ears That Hear

If I tell you that I love you, Will you say you love me back? If, instead, my words are hurtful, Will you go on the attack? Truth and love, a dicey combo: To care, be honest, balance seeks. But joy can be in ears that hear When not found in a mouth that speaks. So, bridle tongue, use gentle words And find the joy in what is heard. ————- H/T to Milton Hankins for his good reminder on a proper posture on both ends of a conversation in “Convince Me.”

Aw, thanks, Jeff. I think your poem and mine could be read together. I loved "bridle tongue, use gentle words." I am so pleased that my poem may have encouraged this one.

Yeah, I have not quite figured out the whole commenting thing.... Flattery is nice, but not ultimately all that helpful, is it? Harsh criticism certainly isn't warranted either, so what is the role of the comment? Perhaps to share as a reader how a poem spoke to them? And, well, if it spoke to me as yours did, in a way to evoke one of my own, well, that seems to be a healthy form of dialog for a poetry site.
