Notes About The Poem

DRIVE TIME TALE

Driving on a two-lane road,
my mind focused and easy,
no worries, no mental load,
I felt good, free and breezy.

Chatting with my backseat child,
enjoying together time,
our moods were playful styled.
All things were surely fine.

A sports car came way too close,
then it slowed, but it did not pass.
Just then, my son’s question rose,
“Why is that man doing that?”

“Son, it’s how traffic news is signaled
when drivers' voices cannot be heard.
Middle fingers mimic the crass tones
of a vile species called 'Greeting Birds."

A bit funny, though situation was sad. Life lessons. Hugs

During a smooth and happy drive, suddenly you got interrupted by a sports car coming in reckless speed, l assume. Even your little grandson felt the brashness of his act when he gestured with the middle finger and you explained it in a humorous way. Beautiful poem, dear Cay Cay.

Haha, good one CayCay, that's a tactful way to put it, "that's how traffic news is signalled". The ol' middle finger can put a crimp on a nice drive.

What a creative/fun write you have here. Love It... Thanks for the laugh. I needed it... OK, so now it is called "Greeting Birds." I must remember this one for the next time driving in this crazy world. Have a fun day writing away..........

Maybe 'greeting birds' can catch on and completely change the attitude of receivers which would deny offenders their intended meaning. Hey, maybe it really could happen. It brings me joy knowing my poem gifted you with laughter, I'm so glad you told me. Thanks, Paula CayCay

Dear CayCay, This gave me a wonderful, genuine laugh. There is nothing quite like the serene peace of a "free and breezy" drive being suddenly interrupted by the unsolicited chaos of a tailgating sports car. Having spent plenty of miles over the years with kids in the backseat, I know exactly how fast your mental gears have to turn when a child drops a sharp, unfiltered question like, "Why is that man doing that?" You're caught completely off guard, navigating traffic while trying to filter the ugliness of the world in real-time. Instead of letting that driver's toxic energy puncture the beautiful, playful mood you shared with your son, you reframed the hostility into a brilliant piece of mock-ornithology. You protected his space while delivering a sharp, satirical wink to the reader. While we can't always control the crassness of the world outside our windows, we have total control over the atmosphere inside our own walls. Blessings, Daniel

Haha. The good old birdie finger. Today I thought I was missing the freeway entrance, so I quickly signaled to get more to the right and get on this street that I took to be freeway entrance. A car blasted its horn at me. I don't think I was gonna be in his way but apparently he thought so. I never honk when people do surprising things in traffic. Just made me feel so stupid. I enjoyed this one, Caycay hope Brian does too
