We heard a shocking revelation this past week on Face the Nation, but the host, Margaret Brennan, did not ask any related follow-up questions. I suggest listening to the linked video starting at the 4 minute mark where the suggestion is made to trade profits from future metal trade for military support that would exclude Russia and China.

What is Ukraine's war really for? How about funds from rare earth ore Hear Lynsey Graham shout "We'll keep Putin out!" And stash trillions in our cash drawer Ukraine has 0.4% of the Earth’s surface but about 5% of the world’s mineral resources. Ukraine is one of the world's top 10 titanium producers, ships iron and steel products to Europe, and has ambitions to become a key supplier of the critical minerals Europe needs to meet its electrification targets and cut reliance on Russian energy.

Yes. They are rich in resources. Hard to know just what is really going on there. I hear so many different opinions

Yes, it's all awful really. War is risky and doesn't solve the causes of conflict, which we can address through diplomacy. Hard to get everyone onboard with that idea.

Thanks Kim, I find that I am more torn about all this as more facts become known. It had all kinds of historic connections to the past and complexities regarding the way we deal with each other as competitors. There's blame for this in a variety of places and past actions, which is not a popular thought at all. It's more comfortable to think in terms of black and white.

Dear Duke, an intriguing limerick. The Ukraine war may be motivated by economic interests, notably the desire to control and profit from its enormous natural riches. Your limerick focuses on geopolitical and financial issues in the Ukraine war, particularly the possible cash-positive benefits of owning the country's mineral riches. Your speech was direct and cynical. The word choice makes this complex notion easy to understand. The motives for the conflict in Ukraine are clear: taxpayers subsidize war costs, causing inflation, poverty, and troubles at home, while Russia gains profit and strengthens its economy.

SP, I like your analysis and I know I usually do since you are very thoughtful and wise. The big losers in this will be the people of Ukraine. Russia and the US have already lost much and one of us or both will certainly lose a lot more. It could have been much better if all were settled through negotiation and fair competition. However, that appears impossible now.

One of my least liked senators but I find myself in agreement this time. A dyed in the wool Trumpster conspiracy theorist made a very truthful analysis. So, what is this war about? Take over Ukraine and help Russia's allies, I never thought of it that way, thank you for this sobering wake up call, Duke. Exciting limericks!

Anaya, I thought he was saying we should make certain Russia and their allies never get access to Ukraine's resources. Apparently, their president (Zelensky) met with financiers from the US recently and the result is part of Senator Graham's presentation. It's really too bad we have to kill people over this. So much wealth is going into this that I am thinking the stakes are getting higher and higher. Very unfortunate for the innocent.

Hello Duke, I really liked your satirical take on the Ukraine war motivations. It is clever AF! I also loved the punchy rhymes skewering the political profiteering that is taking place. A great sharp social commentary, well done. - Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

Daniel, I like the emphasis you gave your comment...very funny. I am so naive I had to look it up! As the pieces come together in our examination of what this is all about, I find that it comes down to the same things that have been causing war for thousands of years. How are we going to get over the animalistic tendencies that prevent more cooperation? I think we need more people who think the way you do!!!!!

Politicians, they have their own agendas for starting up wars, and so many follow their lies, unaware of how it is a trap. In this decade, one would only hope and wish that there is no such thing as war, and killing for their own benefits, no one deserved to live in such times. But still we see all this happening and dividing mankind even more and creating chaos all over the world. I still hope for peace! Pleasure always reading your work. Sending you light

IE, your thinking is on target, and I share your opinion. I would say the politicians are doing the bidding of the wealthy who have significant influence. Money and greed carry a lot of weight. It's not a good situation for us for the long term for sure. You are most kind, and I wish more people understood the wisdom you offer.

Thanks Yolanda. The evil being perpetrated on the victims of war has tentacles and seems very disturbing to me. I'm sure you can identify with these feelings and appreciate very much that you stopped by!!

Politics and war are a dirty game, where the imperialists make money and the innocent suffer.. Your limerick touches upon the problems many face and could trigger many a conspiracy theory...

SO, I like your analysis and think it's right on target. This is all very ethically questionable, but the real goings on hardly make it to the public eye. We only get these occasional glimpses and have to infer what happens behind closed doors. There is a huge amount of money and wealth in play in this conflict.

Wow!! Great information. I knew there had to be some reason/s behind the invasion. I thought maybe access to the port. Thanks for sharing. Sara K

Sara, I think the access to the Mediterranean is part of what Putin was after. This just adds to the value of the land under dispute. It's unfortunate people can't come to some kind of business arrangement or compromise that will preclude invasions, but this has been going on for thousands of years. It seems we've not really advanced ethically in all that time.

US is up to no good there. I hear it's to do with money laundering, but what do I know?

Andrea, Ukraine is the focus of several different objectives by different competing entities. We could question the ethics of many of those involved. In the end, the people of Ukraine will suffer even more than they have. I heard that the US has spent more on Ukraine than on rebuilding Europe at the end of WWII (adjusted for inflation). Hard to imagine so much money and weaponry flowing into this conflict. I think if DT takes over, he'll sacrifice the investment made so far (175 billion in five appropriations) for the right to build a hotel in Moscow!

This is an enjoyable and timely limerick. It has perfect rhyme. Rare earth minerals are at a premium, at least until we find that asteroid that will destroy the valuations

Thanks Hilda, the motivations for war sometimes do boil down to money and power. One of my friends recently mentioned to me news about Zelensky meeting with executives, investors, Blackrock, etc. That news died. There are serious questions about how much is being spent on the war and who will gain from it.
