Dog Days Of Summer

The sun continues to shine;
and the songbirds sweetly sing.
But the dog days of Summer
are on a steady decline.
Leaves retain a shade of green;
and the roses are in bloom.
Yet, as temperatures drop;
Nature starts to change the scene.
The crops ripen in the field;
harvest time is approaching.
And ever so subtlety;
signs of Autumn get revealed.
There's a chill in the night air;
Summer's disappearing fast.
And daylight hours are shrinking;
although it seems so unfair.
Wild geese honking overhead;
have started migrating south.
And squirrels aren't eating nuts;
burying their hoard instead.
Soon, the leaves will start to fall;
to be scattered by the wind,
And when Autumn colors fade,
Winter's white will blanket all.
