The Princess and The Frog Blog: May Day "Baskets" | May day baskets ...

(Image courtesy of countryliving.com)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you remember back in childhood How we loved the first of May? When we hung flower-filled baskets On doorknobs, then ran away? Do you remember how the sweetest basket Was for the one we loved the best And in it went the blossoms That were fairer than the rest? Such a beautiful, gorgeous custom Somehow lost along the way But the memories still linger As we welcome in the month of May.
awww, thank you Gershon for your kind remarks. My mother made and gave away May Baskets and did so until into her 60s. I always delighted in being her 'assistant.' Maypoles we didn't do, except one time in Girl Scouts..fun memories. Enjoy your day, Sara
This is a beautiful poem on the fond memories of May Day baskets full of flowers that one has when one is a youngster, dear Sara. This lovely tradition has faded from memory, but the poem focuses on its nostalgic beauty and the delight it once brought. You beautifully described the warm feelings of nostalgia that come from remembering the tradition of making baskets loaded with flowers and placing them on doorknobs as a sign of friendship and love on May Day when one is a youngster.
thank you, dear Sotto, for your visit and kind words about a nostalgic tradition. May Day was a 'huge' affair for my mom who always prepared and delivered May Baskets. I, of course, loved helping her. She continued her tradition well into her 60s. Her kindness overflowed. Appreciate your visit & enjoy your evening! your poetess friend in Texas, Sara
This nostalgic poem fondly reminisces about a cherished childhood tradition of celebrating May Day with flower-filled baskets. The poet evokes a sense of innocence and joy as they recall the excitement of hanging baskets on doorknobs and then running away, leaving behind tokens of affection for loved ones. The imagery of selecting the sweetest blossoms for the special someone adds a tender touch to the memory..
Pretty poem. Reminiscent of children, playfulness, innocence, children's pranks, and of course the scent of flowers--beautiful things!
