Distance
I don’t know you
Not in the way knowing is understood,
I see you and dream you,
But you are as alien to me
As angels and lunar eclipses.
Once we engaged,
Briefly, eyes meeting in the café bar,
Over the slim volume you read,
Contact, then gone.
A one-way recognition process,
Frothy and slight, meaningless
To you…but to me…
A universe of possibilities,
Star fields opening around you,
Solar breezes ruffling your hair,
Galaxies embracing you,
Framing you against forever.
I don’t know you,
Or how to close the distance,
But I wish I could so much…
