Did She Smile

Floating in vacuum, morphine intravenous supplied, pain deadened, she lies dormant, oblivious to all, thoughts suppressed, unfeeling and benumbed in the emergency cubicle. Her husband holds her hand, icy, like winter at its worst. She moans, eyes flutter, only to fall asleep again. Anesthetized she finds rest. Monitors bleep to rhythm, steady as she goes just like a sailing boat on rough seas. She will survive. Husband bewildered. A human vegetable? Oh no the expert says. She will be fine. The husband dials a number, talks softly not to disturb. There will be no divorce, it's best that they give up and do not meet again. The woman on the bed groans. Is that a smile on her lips?

I’d say it was a smile on her lips, it’s so sad when things go wrong in a marriage for whatever reason, may they live happily ever after. An inspirational read Victor. Hope all is well… Belle

I feel bad for all involved. "Eres Secreto De Amor" a song... comes to mind. With similar circumstances, and a twist is she is the other woman. Se La Vie

Hi Victor, you have always known how to tell a story and make the reader live the lines, as in this most wonderful write. It has been both an honour and a pleasure to read this work. It is a pleasure to be back reading you, my friend. May you ever sing such songs ..... Mike.

What a story. I know a couple who had a story but far different. She was sick and, in the hospital, while his former lover came there to see him, and they had an affair while she lay dying, but she lived. They divorced. He married the other woman. Sad isn't it. The above story sad as well but maybe a happy ending. Well thought out and presented. Thanks for the visit to my page. Sara

Moving and drillingly painful. Almost all of us have to go through something like this, quiet desperation.

You have left us in gripping suspense....! Even at the end I am not sure how their relationship will end ! Great comparison of her limp body to a sailing boat on rough seas! A touching poem, dear Victor !

A gripping, suspenseful story, Victor. It delighted me to discover, that not only would she live, but she"d get to keep her husband, too. Great writing! :) Evelyn

- A human vegetable? ... many "choose" life anyway ... but, what "life" ... it can be nice ... but, it can be painful ... hard to say - A thought-provoking poem, Victor - hugs // Anne-Lise :)

What a sad verse, but a twist of I won. Well done my friend. I still remember how my husband felt when he was passing.. I felt like a life boat trying to throw a lifebuoy to prevent him from drowning.

Love is fragile--Glad he came to his senses. She did smile, but grudgingly. Such is life!
