Delano Goes Back To School

He lives right next door to me and he is seven years old
as I stood on my balcony I watch him come out of the house
backpack strapped to his back he looked forlorn and serious
"Are you looking forward to your first day of school?" I asked
He looked up at me with big brown eyes then
adjusting the strap of his school bag kicked a pebble in his way
"I wish there was no school, only daycare and summer camp
now that I have to go to school, all I do is homework, shower,
then go to bed"

His mom stepped out, " Delano are you ready? "
"Yes mom," he whispered then disappeared inside the car;

I smiled as I recalled my first day of school
The year was 1966. I didn't speak a word of English
I was terrified no one would want to play with me
When I asked my mom, "do I have to go ?"
She kissed me on the cheek, then squaring my shoulders
and said with a big resounding Si, " yes you do !"

The first day of school can be so scary, especially if they don't speak the language, how brave you were at such a young age!

All my kids hate going to school ah and so i could relate to the boy. I loved going to school as my parents didn't put me in school until secondary high school. Kudos for a fine narrative poem! Plz also read and comment my newest poem too.

I know many who do not have much memory of their youth, my brother is one of them, I often tell him stories to help him remember, its ok, love and prayers :)

Those first days of school can be very challenging, especially if it's a new school and you don't know anyone yet. I only went to the samr school two years in a row once ...8th and 9th grade. Every other years it was a new school. Thanks for sharing your experience with your neighbor, Vie. Hugs, Bill

Yes they can Bill, my parents did not speak English, so it was a secondary language that I had to pick up once I started school. we don't forget those pivotal of our child hood. Thanks for reading Bill
