December Past
I still remember when we walked
The winding roadways where we talked,
And faintly sounding at our feet,
December snow would crunch beneath
Each footfall forged a lasting sound
With tracks too deep to touch the wind;
They softly whisper from the ground
Of journeys there and back again
As I look now with older eyes,
I see the woods in white disguise,
And frozen farmland stretching wide—
An icy veil beneath the sky
And still a feeling stops my thoughts,
When for a moment I can hear
Your feet beside me as I walk,
Though turning I find no one near
So many hues have gone away,
But dreams of white will never fade,
Nor moments mirrored by the glow
Of northern stars and falling snow.
