Deceit
The darkness stretching endlessly before him,
he accelerated his speed to reach his goal -
the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel
beckoning him.
The deep longing within turning into agony,
his legs weakening, his eyes growing dim –
the hope that he had nurtured for so long
slowly ebbing.
The blackness around him gradually thinning,
he cried out with delirious anticipation –
he was so close now to fulfilling his dream
of claiming her.
The sweet image of her bathing in sunshine,
he bolted forward, ready to embrace her –
when he could see her swaying in the arms
of another.
The shock of recognition disallowing any pain,
everything he felt dissolved into despair –
as he realized that he had followed the light
into a void.
