Notes About The Poem

A Literary Character Clerihew Poetry Contest. Sponsored by: Andrea Dietrich ~~~~ I grew up with the TV show, movie, book and song about David "Davy" Crockett. I even sat on the actor's (Fess Parker)lap after the Disney movie and TV show came out. Do you know how Davy Crockett's tombstone reads? "Davy Crockett, Pioneer, Patriot, Soldier, Trapper, Explorer, State Legislator, Congressman, Martyred at The Alamo. 1786 – 1836."

David Davy Crockett

David "Davy" Crockett,
wore a coonskin cap not a pretty flowery locket.
Was he the "King of the Wild Frontier"?
The bears would hide from him in fear.


In 1834, David "Davy" Crockett published an autobiography, A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett of the State of Tennessee. Many have written about him.

I almost didn't place this because it was from an autobiography. then I noticed you said from other narratives and indeed, other books have been written on him. Congrats. It's really good.

Dear Paula, Your note about sitting on Fess Parker’s lap adds such a personal layer to the legend of Crockett. It made me reflect on how we transition from seeing these figures as larger-than-life "kings" to understanding the grit of their actual history, the legislator and the martyr. I still remember some of those wonderful days. From the song to the TV show to the day we went to the department store. We stood in a long line for me to sit on his lap. Guess it is still around somewhere. At one point the actor Fess Parker played Davy in a great movie. Guess that is also out there somewhere.
