Darkness Into Light
The night was black and dreary
cold breath hung in the air
trapped in an unfamiliar place
entirely unaware
that destiny would enter in
to change our well-laid plans
the rein of safety, tightly held
would be wrest from our hands
the swiftly cooling embers of the day
had lost their glow
as wearied eyes gave way to sleep; becalmed
our breathing low.
No sooner had we closed our eyes -
it struck with awesome power
and it chose well to ambush at this very darkest hour
But, jolted into consciousness by this unwanted guest
there was no sign of what - or who - had torn us from our rest
In fear, frozen - not a single sound
could now be heard
nothing; save the drumbeats of our hearts
now fully stirred
We quickly scanned the room as still the blackness stung our eyes
all senses now on overload … fear factor on the rise
As one, we made our way toward
the safety of the door
tiptoeing in bare feet on the creaking wooden floor
My hand stretched out before me,
trembling in the frosted air
now found the door - half open
how and why – I didn’t care
Both blinded by the darkness, but determined to be free
we crept along the landing; reaching out on bended knee
Our progress now increasing as we heard a distant cry
which came to a full halt –
as something furry scampered by
She tried hard to resist it
but as fear gripped her soul
a dreadful scream burst from her lungs
as panic
took its toll
We held our breath -
convinced now that our cover had been blown
but as the minutes passed,
it seemed
our tormentor had flown
This centralised our focus as we now surveyed the gloom
and our eyes picked out a dim light
coming from another room
No thought for looking back
we scrambled on toward the light -
not knowing what we’d find, but we were ready for the fight …
Pumping with adrenaline, we flung the door aside
and screaming like two banshees now, we threw ourselves inside
Our cries were met with others now – and fists began to fly
our pounding hearts convinced us
that we were about to die …
. . . . .
Too soon,
the fight was over
and yet,
nobody lay dead
not one weapon had been raised and
not a drop of blood was shed
As stood before us, smiling
were two burly servicemen;
there’d been a minor power cut –
but all was well again.
