Daphne

You’re a Flower in My Garden 3-5-24 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Daphne Your winter child, with beguiling scent perfumes snow and rain, I smile in January’s barrenness to herald crocus, wrens and snowdrops. Sometimes a temperamental garden tot, don’t like wet feet, Evergreen harbinger of bees and ladybugs and butterflies Whispering of vernal winds in their hibernating renewal. I watch the furry maniacs retrieve a cache of summer pine nuts From beneath the cloak of my protection – Spear leaves edged in yellow like wispy winter sunshine -– Giving back a fountain of fragrance splashing from star shaped blooms. Robed in purple royalty, decorating winter’s threadbare garden gown, My blossoms glow through your garden’s gloom, A jubilee of sweet incense, heaven’s winter grace, lovingly shared.

Thank you so much, Ann! So wonderful to hear from you! Hope you are well. My grandmother introduced me to the Daphne plant and I have loved this January bloomer ever since. It reminds me of her and her love of gardens! Sending you blessings!

Hi Sam, Your personification is so sweet and fragrant. I am not quite familiar with these plants. But from your description, I can assume that it is exotic. Of all I love the lines- "I watch the furry maniacs retrieve a cache of summer pine nuts From beneath the cloak of my protection –" I visualize it in my imagination. Squirrels spring out suddenly from under thick bushes with cumbersome foliage. Your artistry is envious and your descriptions give such sensory delight....

My Dearest Rhyme Time Friend, you had me at the first stanza with "beguiling scent perfumes snow and rain" -wow! such a beautiful image- and "crocus, wrens and snowdrops"! - as I adore all three :) A fantastic, expressive personification of a Winter Daphne, with gorgeous details like "Spear leaves edged in yellow like wispy winter sunshine" - such poetic sensory delights elevate your vivid verse to higher heights of amazing! Your golden pen continues to outshine the sunniest of days. Your poetic artistry warms my heart and soul so thoroughly on this raw, rainy, windy March morning in coastal Mass. Thank you, my sweet poetry sis! Warmest wishes sent in star shaped blooms.. ~Susan

Dear Sam, It is quite a captivating tribute to the resilience and beauty of nature personified through the character of Daphne. Through lyrical language, you evoke the changing seasons and the enchanting presence of this winter child in your garden. The delicate balance between fragility and strength and the symbiotic relationship with furry creatures and insects is beautifully depicted. Your words are a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. I love this poetic ode to the enduring spirit of Daphne and the magic of nature's renewal. - Blessings, Daniel

Not a huge flower guy but nothing like a field of poppies. You always write so well Sam. I like the last part, "lovingly shared."

a nicely done personification poem and I assume for the flower personification contest. Isn't the flower named for Daphne of Greek mythology? Can't remember for sure. Nonetheless you've captured the beauty of the flower...love their star-shaped blooms. Best wishes with the contest, Sara
