Dan the Hero, Part Ii
...One such person was the bold Tanya Trace,
a reporter who worked online click-bait,
she lived in New York, knew all the right names,
liked the right causes, knew which folk to hate.
She’d see a tale of Dan saving the day,
and the sight of it made her roll her eyes,
because now matter what The Hero did
she and the other smart folks realized
That this was a battle he’d never win,
this was a game that would go without end,
that for every person Dan somehow saved,
he was abandoning another ten.
“Even with his power, he’s just so small,
so limited, that the people don’t see,
they’re just as likely to die in this world
as they were before this Hero did breathe.”
She’d say that at all the cocktail parties,
and her comrades would cluck in agreement,
some would say he might be somewhat useful
if he joined forced with the government.
But Dan, to his credit, stayed far from them,
and the state made no move to intercede,
(Mostly because they couldn’t kill the man,
and only lay off what could make them bleed!).
But news is new, and Tanya’s editor,
despite his snickers when speaking of Dan,
saw that readers ate up stories of him,
and wanted to put out something quite grand.
Folks knew that Dan made cow-eyes at the girls,
and they figured that would be their way in,
Tanya was a knock-out, all knew it true,
he figured that she was their way to him.
She wasn’t above employing her looks,
and figured it was only playing fair,
men had their strength, women had their wiles,
if that’s what it took, then what did she care?
Now finding the man could be difficult,
there was no pattern to where he would act,
just in the northeast, at any old time,
a bit of a recluse, that was a fact.
It took four whole months of chasing his trail
before opportunity did occur,
a trail derailed outside Baltimore,
nineteen died, but it could’ve been much worse.
Because the wreckage cracked the bottom of
a fuel tank not sitting that far away,
and there were wounded still trapped in the trains,
pinned by metal, and wailing out in pain.
Dan appeared after the first reports had spread,
and in his might way got down to work,
ripping up metal, pulling the wounded
leaping away so they were far from hurt.
He did this at such a dizzying speed
that the cameras could not focus on him,
all we know is that before the tanks blew,
forty more souls were pulled out of the din...
