This is a sight that is quite common in urban areas here, but instead of blankets, cartons. Amazing how 7 words can have such a huge impact. Thank you Darlene, for this as well as for passing by my write.

I'm glad this one touched your heart, Thomas. We are all vehicles of change. "See something. Do something. " Give what you can. And advocate for the homeless. We have God's hands and hearts in us.... "My neighbor is anyone with a need that I am able to meet." A quote by Haddon Robinson .... Blessings, Darlene

I like this modern haiku, Darlene. A bit sad, though. You're a like a photographer who captured the image for a national daily where hopefully those who see it will be inspired to action. Your poetry definitely has a distinct voice! 7. Kim

Our city has shelters, but they fill up fast. And we definitely need more, plus more free job training programs, counseling , etc. Goodwill stores and the Salvation Army do their part wonderfully in this area. But people still fall through the cracks. And then their are the mentally ill who like being on the street and refuse help.

This is another lovely haiku, Darlene; you have a keen eye. [Sorry about your son; yes, poetry makes for ideal therapy.] // paul

Good morning, Paul! I remember answering you yesterday, but I must not have hit the submit button and lost it. Thanks for your sensitive comments and yes, writing is my joy. It started out as therapy, but turned into something much more. God's ways are so mysterious. He has a plan for every situation to make things better. We just have to trust in Him and His timing....Darlene

It was startling to run across this scene on my way to catch the trolley in early morning. No matter how many new shelters are opening they fill too quickly. It's so heartbreaking!

I could identify with your sorrow because I lost my son to illness.(cystic fibrosis) a lung disease. When he was first diagnosed at 3 yrs old, I was sitting by his hospital bed crying while he slept. I reached in my purse for a tissue, but instead pulled out a pen! Instinctively, I realized that God was telling me to handle my grief by writing. I started writing my first poem that night."Not My Son!",which was published in E. K. Ross' book ON Children and Death.Gary lived to age 13.

Thanks, Ravi, I hope I got the message across that they are also using the umbrella as a blanket to hide under from peering eyes.
