County Fair

Summer swelter on an August night You can feel the heat in the air Carnival lights and cars in the grass It’s time for the county fair French fries and burgers Candy cotton sticky fingers Ferris wheels, spinning wheels The memory still lingers Dust on your shoes As we walked holding hands Kids fishing for prizes A line of concession stands Local band trying to make its mark Dancing on grass under a tent Walking around until well past dark Win a Teddy by pitching a cent Ice cream soda was a special treat Greasy pole was a funny sight Admiring the car with the rumble seat Fireworks on closing night Special memories of days gone by My mind often takes me there Back when love was a country girl And we went to the county fair.

I always enjoyed those county fairs, being on the arm of a worthy beau winning me a teddy bear. Such sweet memories that we carry with us and we still dwell on today. I do love the flow of this piece.

Thinking about the 'Good Ole Days' and the fun times of our youth seems to have a way of taking us right back there, just as your poem has done. The dusty feet, the french fries. It's all there. Nice write, Vince. Keep writing. D S-J

Your poem evokes wonderful memories for many of us -- I see your readers are unanimous on this. But your words are so vivid. I can feel the "sticky fingers" and the spinning of the ferris wheel. Ice cream sodas were heaven sent and I often "fished" for prizes. Thank you so much for transporting me to happy days at the county fair. Great write! Love, Carolyn

'...when love was a country girl,' lovely! Sweet reminiscences of times gone by... what a shame. I wrote one very similar to this based on the fair featured in the movie 'Doc Hollywood,' one of my all time favourites. Best wishes, Keith

We have a little home-town country fair each end of summer...exactly how you describe it. So fun to take the grandkids, and look at all the 4-H animals!! Always eat too much junk food....but the sights and smells take me back to my own hometown fair!
