Nancy, I see you have a great deal of wisdom and experience with life. I am afraid the die is cast. Thus, your solution is elegant. Be as self-sufficient as possible (and spend as little as possible. I was very lucky to get out of the real estate market about 7 years ago, and still--I have had to downsize my lifestyle. Your poetry is is a real gift for me as it is not the typical drivel. You are writing about the real deal--thank you again for your thought provoking comment.
