but this morning, as she turned away to leave, to keep a promise she had made, she glanced back at him, and flashed what to him was a reassuring, if conspiratorial, hint of a smile in her eyes.. that, too, was a promise and secretly he rejoiced, for it might still be that though he did hesitate, in time, his love or infatuation, as she had laughingly insisted, may not yet be too late, if only it could wait.
