[This poem was written c.1967. It was first published in an American Baptist Publication Society journal, then, included in my first poetry chapbook, "The Lady in the Pink Hat," Candor Press, 1969.]

When restless suns have cast their final ray Upon this space of ground that I've possessed And hymns of sorrow punctuate the day This soul of mine shall have its lasting rest. Then tongue shall once again of briefness speak Life's swift journey once again reviewed, That cause which hastens anxious men to seek Will lead another man to faith endued.

"And hymns of sorrow punctuate the day This soul of mine shall have its lasting rest." At my Daddy's funeral we sang "Oh When the Saints Go Marching In". I have no idea why reading this reminded me of the gladness of that, but it did.

Well, I'm just glad it got a reaction. I always thought it was one of the duller poems I've ever written. Thanks for giving it a thumbs up. I love to hear that song at a funeral, but I don't go to them anymore no matter who. I like to remember them as they were when living. Thanks for your sharing, Caren.

Truly a beautiful poem, Milt. May the torch be passed!... Interesting that you could conceive of such a far-off moment way back in 1967,... and nice that the moment is still quite far-off!
