Clowns

Ever since I was just a little kid, Hated clowns, from them I hid, No reason why, I cannot think, But always in horror did I shrink. Possibly because it was a mask, who's hiding there, should I ask. Why do they keep themselves hid, Is it just to frighten a little kid? To Billy Smarts Circus, once I did go. Never like the smell, the crowds or the show. Animals in cages, being whipped to perform, Surely this horror cannot be the norm. People cheered when the clowns came on, All I wanted was soon to be gone. They frolicked and tumbled, the children laughed, I said to myself, are they blooming daft? Who's hiding behind those colorful looks The devils and demons I read of in books? Irrational fears of a child you might say, But I've hated clowns until this day. © Dave Timperley 25 July 2016
