Christmas Contrasts

The north wind blew and we were home in front of a roaring fire amid perfumes of plum puddings, pies of spicy mince, fruit cakes, marshmallows and eggnog. All around the warm sitting room colorful balloons, tinsel, and ribbons lighted our house with joy, trees blinked their softened lights as we munched hot chestnuts and drank sweet punch and cognac. The south wind blew hot and humid. The earth was arid and unproductive. Children crawled on thin emaciated legs bellies rumbling with hunger and mouth parched with lack of dew. Blow oh north wind, for we are safe, Who cares what happens in other spheres? Note: For how many years will Africa face famine. Right now around the world, five children die every minute as a result of malnutrition. Millions more live with the effects for the rest of their lives, because their bodies and brains haven’t developed the way they should. We need to act now to help these children. What was done by each Christmas? At least go everyday to this site and click on the help food program button. It will cost you nothing. The Hunger Site .

the word Malnutrition and poverty go hand in hand in Africa - it is a very sad fact, but my family does its bit in giving clothing and food. I'm so glad you posted this poem on Poetry soup, perhaps, just perhaps, people will open their hearts and wallets this Christmas. Christmas hugs and blessing Victor. Jennifer.

Victor, sad poem. Horrible about Africa that children are starving. We have a lot of homeless and I don't know how they survive from one day to the next. Hugs

I hope you are surrounded by the boons of a north wind this holiday, Victor. How sad that so many people are going hungry. We've been told there are 54 million Americans who don't have enough to eat now. Your poem is very touching and I'll check out The Hunger Site. Hope you have a merry Christmas! Hugs, Carolyn

In America so much has been done for the people who might have gone hungry except for the gifts of many including farmers who have donated instead of plowing under their foods that could not be harvested. Thanks for the visit to my page. Sara

good poem, essential point contributing off and on all year as I can. What kind of present is any better than to give essentials to others and their pets. I don't need another watch or jewelery. Good reminder to all of us. Just heard a lot of folks going on planes and trips What is going on with us?? Need to take care of our nurses and techs? poetry is important now, soft and gentle, hard and real.

It's so easy to forget as we over indulge at Christmas and indeed throughout the year that there are some who are lucky if they have one meal a day, no bed to lie in and no hope for the future, if everyone gave the price of a cup of coffee to a registered charity, what a difference it would make to many who often through no fault of their own find themselves in those circumstances. Well written Victor Tom
