Children Learn Best When---

Children learn best when sitting at a desk for hours on end They do even better if they have to 'hold it' until breaktime Children learn best when they do not speak unless called on They do even better if the teacher talks all of the time Children learn best when their every mistake is corrected and criticized They do even better if they are made to stand on a chair in the corner Children learn best when they are divided into groups -- based on ability They do even better if their quiz scores are posted on a wall for all to see Children learn best when they memorize arithmetic and grammar facts They do even better if second language learners sit way in the back Children learn best when their teachers are completely different from them They do even better if their teachers are prejudiced against them ************* Every single statement above was true of my elementary schools That's why I became a teacher ~ to upend all those rules

Read Nature of Prejudice by Gordon Alport about token blacks. Is Gershon German for gesundheit? Does remind me of George Gerschwein. Guess Spanish is my second language. Adonde' adonde' hay ido me perro.

Thanks for the tip on the Alport book, James! I'll check it out sometime during the month of August. (First two weeks are incredibly crowded, so it may be just a bit)… And thanks for cracking me up with the gesundheit comment!! Finally, couldn't decipher the Spanish. Let me know what it means. Thank YOU for your visit! ~gw

Amazing, astounding, astonishing 'coincidence,' Andrea. I teach ESL too! For the last 30 years or so, I've been teaching 16 - 28 hours a week, of late 'international students.' Used to also teach regular high school English 12 hours a week. I'm so excited to find that we share this profession! Please tell me about your school and your students (on Soup mail). I'll respond Saturday night. (Jewish Sabbath's in between). You've really made my day! Best wishes, Gershon

Children lean best when they have a teacher who understand their needs! Bravo so glad you are able to upturn the rules. I had a torrid time at school was hit by my teacher on the first day and bullied up until yr ten when a teacher finally realised what was going on as he witnessed it first hand, I worked in a school for 16 years and had such compassion for those who are victims to bullying of course its so different now with cyber bullying:-( hugs jan xx

As they say --- they do? --- School is supposed to bring out the best in us, but it often brings out the beast in us... Thank you for weighing in on this one, Jan! Much appreciated. Best wishes, Gershon
