This is the ending of “Child Abuse Month.” I raised the stanza in their honor for you to join me and uplift with honor, to every voice silenced, to every dream broken, to every small heart still beating with hope—We lift these words like lanterns, vowing to shield the innocent, to defend their laughter, and to fight for a world where all children are safe. This in my “Linking Pin Sonnet” dedicate to all Children on this occasion, entitled “Raise The Shield!”
May the God who binds up the brokenhearted strengthen your hands to shield the weak, soften your heart to hear the silent cries, and open your eyes to see each child as precious beyond measure. Go now — not in fear, but in fierce love, not in silence, but in bold protection, not waiting for others to act, but stepping forward as lights in dark places. Raise your voices, lift your shields, and let your lives be a sanctuary where every child can laugh, dream, and live unafraid. And may the blessing of the Almighty — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — go with you, ahead of you, and within you, today and always.
Linking Pin Sonnet was invented by Joseph S. Spence Sr. (Me), while studying English literature, creative writing, African diaspora, Japanese linguistics, and mythology at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, on January 15, 2007. It consists of 14 lines of eight to eleven syllables. The end of each line links with the next. The concept is based on the leadership principle of accomplishing an organization’s task. Strengthening organizational echelons at each level comes by connecting each element with a linking pin leadership, thus obtaining maximum productivity in its goal’s completion. One should also set the links in a bicycle chain moving it forward. Visualize each linking pin connecting to the next ensuring strength and safety, moving every adjoining part to reach maximum potential in mission accomplishment. Additionally, the linking pin sonnet resonates with two lovers on the same sheet of music linking together, singing the same song, moving in the same direction, strengthening each other, overcoming obstacles, reaching their goals, and achieving success and victory. This is the practice of “Jumping the Broom” at an African American wedding. (Atunis Galaxy Poetry. 2019. Https://atunispoetry.com). "Raise the Shields"
(Dr. Spence Linking Pin Sonnet for Child Abuse Prevention Month)
Cries pierce the silence where trust should have grown,
Grown are the shadows where safety's unknown,
Unknown are the wounds that no eye can see,
See how the soul screams while lips whisper "free."
Free them from hands that betray every vow,
Vow to stand firm and protect them somehow,
Somehow light breaks through the thickest despair,
Despair shatters when bold hearts choose to care.
Care isn't passive — it shouts in the street,
Street after street, we march so harm meets defeat,
Defeat the silence, the shame, and the fear,
Fear not the battle — the children are near!
Near beats the heartbeat of futures at stake,
Stake down the shields — defend every child’s sake!
