True Story. Nobody wanted to mess with my mom when she was mad. That friend of hers was a bad egg. Any time someone moved into our neighborhood she would be first to latch onto them. She would make fast friends and give them the low down on everyone in the neighborhood. She was also a thief. If she couldn't talk you into giving her something she wanted, one day it would just go missing. Needless to say she had no friends for long. However, she should have realized she couldn't steal a living thing. A pet would do it's best to escape.  (Silly Lady, Tricks Are For Kids.)

Smokey was a lovely cat. He was a big black Persian, And Mama had a lady friend, Who was a not nice person. She lived across the way from us, And envied everyone. Whatever nice things that they had, Were hers when day was done. She'd find a way to get it, A way to make it hers. She couldn't just go buy one. She'd open not her purse. She liked Smokey very much. Talked oft about his beauty. She often asked my mom for him. She said, "Don't ask for things unduly." She told her to stop asking, Because he was our cat. She said, "You came here for a visit. Here's tea and now lets chat." That day our cat went missing, And Mama knew the score; For she had a reputation, And she'd give her what for. She waited days for Smokey, To return unto his home. Then she went for a visit, To the lady at her home. She didn't want to let Mom in. Said she'd come over after, But Smokey heard Mom's voice, And he set up a clatter. He howled and yowled and Mama said, "You give me back my cat! If you don't I'll take him back! You can be sure of that!" Her daughter opened up the door, And Smokey ran to Mom. She gave the woman a warning look, Said, "This friendship now is done." We never saw that one again., And Smokey never roamed. I guess he found it safer, When he stayed close to home.

Smokey knew he had a true home with mama; so I'm sure he would have successfully escaped from the neighbor and come back. You have told a nice tale with great descriptiveness and rhyming.

Thanks bunches Robert. Yes Smokey knew where his home was and he wanted out. She had him locked in one of her bedrooms and her daughter let him out. God Bless, JB

Heya Judy, your poem reminds me of when I was a kid, an elderly woman on our street used to let every cat from the neighborhood into her house, and fed them, but unlike the nut job in your wonderful poem, they could come and go at will, a very enjoyable read, cheers David

Thanks bunches David. I know there are people like that and they only want to help but I don't like people feeding my cat. It's very easy fore a cat to put on weight but hard to lose it and they can actually get so fat the develop diabetis and die. Thanks bunches. God Bless, JB

What a lousy friend your mother had! I'm glad she ended the friendship. Glad Smokey stayed home with you after this bad experience. I really can't even imagine stealing a neighbor's pet. Hope you were able to release a little angst while writing this poem, Judy. Smokey sounds like a wonderful pet. Hugs, Carolyn

Thanks bunches Alexis. Yes they do know when they are loved and they love us back. He wanted to come home that's for sure. As she left Mom heard that woman yelling at her daughter for letting the cat out of the bedroom where he was being held captive. God Bless, JB

Judy, I have so enjoyed your tales of Smokey. He must have been some special cat. I simply cannot imagine someone stealing their neighbor's cat. Guess it happens!

Thanks bunches Milton. Someone in my neighborhood is now trying to steal my cat. I can't let her out because they immediately let her in their house and feed her. She is getting quite chubby though I have her on a diet. It's winter now but when she comes home her fur is always warm so I know she has been inside somewhere. Wish I could find out where. Thanks bunches. God Bless, JB
