Notes About The Poem

Can I Interrupt?

“What are you having?” the waiter asked.
“I’ll have a Cosby - a Cosby on the rocks,” I replied.

Can I Interrupt?

I’m putting all of my energy into this school thing. It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that I once dreamed of doing this.

Yesterday after class, I was lounging on the Paris metro, just lost in thought. I find trains relaxing, there’s something about the ocean of motion and the rhythm of sounds. Anyway, I think I have self-diagnosed Lucky Girl Syndrome - I’m self-aware enough to know I’m not lonely anymore and that I’m wanted by someone I want. Hear me universe - I appreciate.

In my little ‘office’ later, suspended six flights above the street, I’m all about note taking. I jot ‘em in the margins of books and I highlight, color code and emphasize the lecture notes from each class. I have two big tests tomorrow - interruptions haven’t been welcome all week - I think everyone I’ve yelled at understands the situation - but Peter pointed out, last night about midnight, when stealing a kiss before he slunk-off to bed, that Newton was interrupted by an apple and we all know what happened there.

The syllabus seemed vague about the points at stake - which, in turn, launched a wave of takes, but I’m too tired to have a proper panic attack. School is full of test cycles - loops of stress, striving, and achieving, that peak with a period of reward before the next round of stress begins. That's called “Schopenhauer's cycle of dissatisfaction” in psychology class.

Here’s something weird. Two days in a row now, Chronopost (French UPS) pulled up, out of the blue, with swag-bags. Day one had one from Marni (an Italian fashion culture brand) and today there was one from A.P.C. (a French fashion brand). The bags had scarfs, socks, fragrance samplers, rhinestone barrettes, statement belts, mini clutches and little leather accessories like iPad and AirPod covers and discount coupons. I get why an influencer might get these, in our modern ‘attention economy,’ but why me?! ~finger to lips~ Someone’s made a mistake.. let’s not put the kibosh on it.

Things…
What’s cool to me now: watercolors, resting, no TikTok and Apple tech everything.
What I’m thinking: First thought, best thought. Making finger-guns to emphasize a point and prove I’m right.
Fashion: not styling myself (no makeup) but I DO want to perfect the perfect out-of the-shower messy-bun.

Oh! Before I forget, if you have a chance, try a fig leaf martini with artichoke pasta.

Can you suggest where one might find an exceptionally lush and pleasing fig leaf to pluck? =]

Your pieces, always a treat for me. ESPECIALLY so this one this morning before I go ‘cover’ two of the 3k+ NO KINGS demonstrations we’re having over here today. . . . I got so used to reading on the subway commuting to/from school it got so I couldn’t read unless I had the rumble and screeching of the NYC subway in the background. I remember the Paris Metro being comparatively quiet. Rubber wheels? . . . Looked up “Schopenhauer's cycle of dissatisfaction”. Didn’t know it had a term. . . Anais, <3

I repurposed Schopenhauer's theory from consumerism to academia - but that's what bad writers DO. Any metro will do - I'd like to take that one that runs completely across Europe and Asia. When I was 13ish we took one from Paris to Moscow and back. I have an old 'sleep sounds' app that has helicopter sounds - those put me to sleep like lullabies. I haven't read much about the no Kings demonstrations - were there fewer people than the first one?

There's a lot more Mark Twain or Oscar Wilde going on here than, say Lord Byron or Coleridge. Ms. Essayist debonair to be sure. Merci and bon nuit.

I'll take comparison to any of those writers =]. I think of the stories as vignettes.
