Calendar's Deceptions
When calendars say Summer has departed,
don’t store away your shorts and flip-flops just yet.
Summer isn’t ready to defer to Fall’s reign.
Heat and humidity will linger a while, you can bet.
By summer’s end, many schools in the South
have been in session for several weeks.
Kids in un-airconditioned schools trudge home
eager to drink Kool-aid and wade in creeks.
Pool parties and cookouts occur infrequently
after Summer’s last hurrah, Labor Day,
but take heart. There’s so much to look forward to.
A riot of colors will soon be on display.
Death in Nature engenders amazing beauty
and leads to new life in the spring
When summer ends, I commit it to memory
and think of what fall and winter will bring.
