Brown
Brown coat, brown hair, brown eyes…
Brown smothers me with thoughts of you
How warmly, earthly, do you smile
Brown is with me all the while
Truly, each dirt path I pass or trod
Reminds me still that you too walk,
With those brown dress shoes
And a brown frown too
Perhaps a brownie will tame thoughts of you!
How sweet this chocolate is,
Almost as bubbly as your guffaw-
Deep, masculine, strong
With purpose, humorous—then gone
I listened to you speak
As intelligent as before
And your brown briefcase opens
As my heart sinks to the floor
Once or twice I have thought
You no longer care that I’m around
But then I always remember what you were and are-
Friendly, smart, funny, warm…and brown
