Notes About The Poem

Written June 7, 2026 for the  '2026-06-02 Breathless' Contest of Constance La France

Arlaina Tibensky Quote: Suffocation is a cruel way to go.

Breathless

“Suffocation is a cruel way to go.” - Arlaina Tibensky

Battered and bloodied, she suddenly came to!
Recently raped, in utter darkness she now lay.
Entirely baffled, she felt so very cold
And knew somehow her foe had gone away.
Trembling, she realized where she might be.
Her body inside a box had been encased.
Loudly she screamed; frantically she flailed.
Engulfed by terror, she knew where she’d been placed.
Shallow became her breath. She no more made a sound.
Suffocation was her fate beneath the lonely ground.

Andrea, I was really captivated by your poem. You have the most exquisite imagination. The poem sounds sophisticated as the meter and internal rhyme scheme are consistent.

So powerful with tragic undertones. Quite sad is the end of many such women, raped and strangled by wicked hands. Great acrostic. All the best dear friend.

Dear Andrea, think of life. You describe death so clearly. Not a pleasant way to die.

Just last month you locked a woman in a cage, I'm becoming concerned! Dramatic writing, darling one, it shivered my timbers and is bound to place.

It was actually April for Nette's SHOCKED TABLEAU, remember?

Oh gosh. I don't even recall the caged one. For one of Nette's contests? You do know I watch lots of true crime, right? Truth is certainly stranger than fiction.

This may be the best acrostic poem I ever read but beating and burying someone alive not something I want to imagine though it would truly leave the person breathless all the best for the contest

To me, that is the most terrifying way to die, exactly as you’ve described it, Andrea! I can’t even think about it. Best of luck in the contest, though…

Yes, but there are even worse things that I have heard of: such as death by slow torture or by fire. I am deathly afraid of fire, so much that I am unable to light a match. If I go to light a match, I just drop it instinctively!!

That would be frightening indeed! In the dark, surmising one’s death as she became breathless after her torturous ordeal. A special place in hell for those monsters!

Yes, these monsters. I see lots of true crime on the ID channel. It's unbelievable to me how even seemingly normal people can murder people they once loved.

Wow, Andrea, this is a dynamic poem. I once saw a movie like this, a suspense movie for sure. But that time she was actually rescued at the last second!! Whew. Well done poem. Moon Harp

thanks so much. I probably saw that same movie as you. But I don't think she had been raped first. I think I have seen three such movies and maybe in one movie like that, the person never escaped.

This is out of the box for you, Andrea and I don’t mean the kind your damsel found herself in. Nice to see you leave your writing comfort zone. ;-)
