Books And Readers Are Beautiful

I find in today's world, books and readers are missing. Where have the readers gone? Why are books so unattractive? Could it be the style of writing or even their covers? Years ago many would share their books with friends, telling them the book was a must read. Does the book hold the reader, or does the reader hold the book? The style of book needs to entice the reader to read, starting with a catchy and colorful cover. Yes, the beauty of any book, is in the reader's eye to behold and enjoy reading.

I love to read and just finished an old book written by Mauve Binchy, an Irish writer. Sad to see bookstores closing because so many are "plugged in" Watching movies after reading the book with same title is never the way to go in my opinion. You form pictures in your mind as you read the story that are spoiled by the producer of the movie. To me the beauty of any book is the way it makes you feel and how long that feeling stays with you. For me, "the book holds the reader"

Fantastic poem. I loved the lines about... does the book hold the reader or does the reader hold the book. Superb. Yes. We have forgotten how to immerse ourselves in books. - We bought books and swapped with each other ... went to the library to borrow books ... I was a member of four book clubs and got books in the mailbox every week ... that's the end of that now ... I still read ... or listen to books online - I moved to a new house five years ago ... the first corona year ... probably threw away a ton of books ... no recycling would accept them (corona risk:) - Best wishes in the contest, :) - hugs

Such thoughtful questions, Paula — this really speaks to the shift we’re seeing in how people connect (or don’t) with books today. I especially loved the line, “Does the book hold the reader, or does the reader hold the book?” So true — it’s a relationship, and your poem captures that beautifully.

Are you putting this in the 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' contest? Since the 3rd grade, I always had a book going. Loved the feel of books, Mom, Sis and I shared books, I'd disappear at work for lunch to read by myself rather than join someone. Then, I fractured my skull and couldn't turn the page w/o forgetting much of what I just read. I'm thankful I can brain-retain poems and shows/movies. Excellent write. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Nice encouraging poetry, Paula. The quality and personal presentation of their story sometimes gets lost in the buildup and advertising of a book.
