My granny was sick as a parrot She always liked that Steve Mcgarrett Her favorite show Hawaii 5-0 Was cancelled for football, Goddamnit As Hawaii she couldn’t afford Struck a pose on her ironing board ‘Jump up here with me And surf this wild sea And we’ll surf in the name of Jack Lord’ A committed silk bloomers wearer She gave a free shot to her carer He went very red And that’s when he said Your bloomers are still on the airer Written: 16 July 2022 Contest: Limerick Sponsor: Lisa YY

Thank you, Janice. Funny how writing works, my original wording in verse two was ‘we’ll surf in the name of the Lord’…. Whooah… that just had to become ‘Jack Lord’. Surely a gift from above… for which I take full credit ;-)

I hadn’t seen the link to the picture so I thought it was a Limerick on any theme, so I wrote ‘Excalibur’. It’s near the top of my poems list. People liked it but no one mentioned my oversight… I realised something was amiss when I noticed everyone was writing about surfing grannies!

Thanks, Jenna. My first entry was one Limerick, but I noticed a couple of multi stanza entries so I just took a chance. It was actually your entry that made me realise that the picture was integral to the contest. I thought, ‘why is everybody writing about surfing grannies?’ Well I re-read the rules and… oops!

Thanks, Tom. Actually, I wrote verse three first and the Hawaii 5-O thing came after. Had to withdraw my first entry as I’d missed the requirement to work with the image. They’ve remade 5-0 but it didn’t work for me. Hope you’ve got your ice cubes and parasols ready. Terry
