Black Hole of Calcutta

An Indian beauty and nutter:
her eyelashes started to flutter,
her butt in the air
she laid it all bare,
revealing her hole of Calcutta...

Welcome to Poetry Soup. I welcome you with the love of the Lord, expressed by John 3:16 of the Bible, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Be blessed.

While limericks often employ clever humour and playfulness, this one is not only in poor taste but crosses the line into vulgarity racism, and demening of women. It uses a pun referencing the 'Black Hole of Calcutta'—a deeply tragic historical event in which 146 people were locked in a small space out of which only 23 survived. People died in horrific conditions during British colonial rule in India. To reduce such a solemn moment in history to a crude joke feels not only distasteful, but also disrespectful. I understand and value that Poetry Soup embraces a variety of voices and poetic styles. However, I believe the platform also has a responsibility to uphold a basic standard of respect. There are many Indian people on this site that I am sure will quietly take offence and not say anything.

Hi Maria, I'm with you on this, very poor taste, not funny. It looks like he's a joker or maybe a robot looking at all the repeat comments and only has this one poem in the list. Makes me wonder how these potd poems are really selected

Hi Keith, Thanks for asking and replying.I am quite well and wish you the same. While I quite agree that both sides were opressive and cruel, the British who were incarcerated were individual soldiers. Mass death is nothing to be made light of no matter who. However, my remark was homing on the distastefulness of the limerick and using the title as a cheap rhyming tool. The real issue is the casting aspersions on a woman of another race, who had nothing to do with it. Besides being misogynistic and disparaging to women - what made it even worse was a race was mentioned. That was the point I was trying to make.

Hi Maria, maybe I have a mutant comic gene but I don’t think it’s all those things you mentioned. It may be crude and vulgar but it’s a bawdy limerick. I don’t see any racism in it, the men that died in the hole were British POWs. There are many limericks that make fun of all ethnicities. I don’t think anyone is making fun of British colonial rule or Indian people. It was an oppressive and cruel time. Hope you are okay.
