Birmingham My Idyll City

I recall the nitty-gritty Of days gone by in the city Tho' I'm not asking for pity I love Birmingham, my city. On the doorstep the jobs were there Work was easy found everywhere Tho' never a penny to spare There in Birmingham, I declare. Noise from factory symphony Smoke billowing out from chimney Worst of all was outside privy That was Birmingham, our ditty. We walked to school in heavy smog Didn’t bother us, nor the fog Or those walking to their jobs Good old Birmingham, so it was. Excitement when Fair came to town Three times a year on some spare ground Straight after school off we were bound Fun in Birmingham, always found. There was a lady we called Miss Made toffee apples for us kids Will never forget her for this Heart of Birmingham, it was bliss. We would hear the church bells ringing Passing steam trains loudly hissing Aston Villa fans when cheering Joy of Birmingham’s true meaning. Though we've many had claim to fame Times have changed nothing is the same Yet still there flows the River Tame Thumbs up Birmingham, keep aflame. 18th September 2021

My late wife had lots of ancestors planted all around there . . . . waiting for Halloween to arrive?

Hi Rico, us Brummies love the Bullring, great for shopping now that shops are re-opening after covid, it’s worth the forty minute bus ride into Birmingham for me, I now live on the outskirt of the city. Thank you… Belle

We made many trips to Birmingham when our daughter studied at Birmingham City University for 3 years. Two years on and we miss going. We enjoyed The Jewelry Quarter, Brindley Place and Winterbourne Gardens too. Your poem stirred up images from another time but ones I'm sure you hold very dear. Lovely poem. Cheers - Gary

Hi Gary, it’s good that your daughter studied here at Birmingham City University and that you got to see some of the many sights and places to visit. This poem came from memories of the past though Birmingham is still a special, busy, buzzing, forward looking city. Thank you… Belle

Your poem took me back to my days in your homeland (I lived in London for couple of years) but the Birmingham you describe is a special treat --enjoyed the lively images of daily life. All the best, Belle.

Hi Vijay, there is so much more I could have written about Birmingham but the poem would have been too long. I have written another poem on the subject which I will post at a later date. Thank you for your comments… Belle

Travelling from Wales we stopped in Birmingham. Though I would buy some food only to find the train had left. One hour later I arrived in London. And that's alll I know of Birmingham. Hugs.
