Bird Lover

Lately, as sure as the sun rises on the eastern horizon A certain cheery robin [the same one every day] sits On my porch railing and tells me Spring has arrived, When I have acknowledged her presence, she skitters Across the yard in search of juicy earthworms, and Suitable materials for nest-building beneath the soffits. I am having an affair with this insanely personable bird Who chatters at me like we are old remembered friends, Chirping her familiar tune to announce her presence, She flits back and forth from yard to the dogwood limbs Like she is searching for the perfect nesting spot, [She misdirects me, for she has already chosen the eave] Reminding me how, last year, I had protected her young From all the feral cats that staked out her location. So, I will do the same this year. I will occasionally peek Into her nest to see how far everything has come along; She knows I am keeping watch, protecting her from harm, And when her fledglings teeter on the edge of their home I will sit on the porch and shoo away unwanted intruders; Making sure her babies have their wings before I retreat. This is an excellent beautiful poem, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it Milton. You must have felt too good to meet the same bird this spring too and indeed it is God given gift, to have been able to protect her. Congrats on your placement. God bless ~ Ani

Ah, thanks, Caren. She is so beautiful and so faithful about coming back now for the third year to nest at my house. I have a problem with feral cats in the neighborhood, so I have to protect her and her fledglings.

Thanks, Linda. When you live alone, you are particularly aware of these strange relationships...and they are especially nice.

This is wonderful poem, and I think Constance is going to love it. I wish I had a bird that I could be friends with! We had swallows several years ago and they did not like us trying to see their nests, so they never returned the next year to that same nest area

True story, Andrea. That bird has an uncanny sense of my presence and has developed a trust that is rather rare between man and birds. I hope she likes it! Who knows....
