Best Day Ever

She thought she could get by with walking over the frozen lake. But then she remembered stories of others who did not make it. Her fear held her back. It usually does. Sometimes more than once a day. Come on! Her friends urged her. We are all going out there! She watched them from her window, wishing she had the nerve. They were sliding around, pulling each other’s sleds with ropes. Their laughter finally pulled her out of her doldrums and her safe spot. She was soon gingerly walking on the ice, her heart singing. “Hey! It’s Suzie!” Her friends ran toward her. They had all kinds of ideas. She had brought skates, but none of the rest of them had them. She put them on, but soon went down. More than one time. Forget the skates! Her friend Sam suggested. That’s where ours are. Their skates were lying in clumps all over the frozen ice hills. She put on her boots and began walking across the lake again. It was a brisk, fine, cold day, and the sun was out. What if the ice melts? She asked her friends, worried. “Tommy’s daddy is a park ranger. He says this won’t melt for a month.” They all agreed, dispelling her fears. She had the best day ever!
