Nature dons Autumn's multicolored shawl
as long days shorten and short nights grow long.
And squirrels stash stores of nuts in the Fall,
aware Winter will shortly be along.
Geese skedaddle south in the night like thieves,
fleeing Winter's inevitable cold.
And lime, peridot, and emerald leaves
morph into orange, amber, red, and gold.
Jack Frost chisels abstracts on windowpanes,
sculpting surreal swirls of frozen breath.
And Autumn winds gather Summer's remains,
weaving a colorful shroud for its Death.
October scribbles on leaves like a child
with colored crayons, leaving us beguiled.
