Beauty of Solitude Contest by Line Gauthier
Fifth Place

Enjoying a period of solitude On the porch in dark last night A peacefulness from deep within Enveloped me - life seemed right I felt a warmth of well-being Settling my spirit so calm Cradling me with serenity A soothing type of balm A whippoorwill broke the spell A lonesome sorrowful call I said a prayer of gratitude I was not lonely at all Finding happiness from within Took time for me to discover A process of facing truth and fear Changing how I treat others There is no beauty like solitude Even if whippoorwills intrude

I can definitely relate to the sentiments of this amazing piece especially since I am one who treasure solitude - private alone time to relax, release and refresh! What an enjoyable read! I loved the imagery and also the symbolism of the Whippoorwill - there is always something to break the spell and bring us out of our peaceful reverie:-)! Congratulations on your well-deserved win, dear Lady! Hugs. Pandita

'Finding happiness from within Took time for me to discover A process of facing truth and fear Changing how I treat others' - These lines are profound, Susan. I think the best anyone can do for themselves is to honestly learn & face who they really are so they can learn how to be at comfort with & find peace with themselves. Congrats! All the best. :) ~ Artsie

Susan, as I read your lovely poem, I felt as if I was sitting on your porch. Introducing a whippoorwill to your poem added the feeling of being alone. Congratulations. ~ Sonia

Thank you! Wasn't always like this, believe me! What comes natural now took a long time to learn...

Susan, you must have edited your poem, 'cause what I am reading has whippoorwill spelled correctly. lol Regardless of the spelling, the analogy is great. I was intrigued by your words. As always, the imagery was exquisite because it is sheer realism. Congratulations on your win.

Enjoying my solitude was/is something I failed to conquer - oh, I'm good at it if someone 'special' is eventually coming home, but being alone in the world earned me a 'F.' There is a beautiful mood cast and held throughout your poem that is both light and serious, as well as captivating. A joy to read, Susan. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

My kind of poem and my kind of night, except you can keep the whippoorwill. (My poem, "Uninvited Guest" is about whippoorwills) I think it would have been nice to share that evening. Nothing like sitting on the porch swing and listening to the night.

Did I spell whipperwill wrong? Now I gotta look that up. Lol. I read yours and no not at 4 am would like to hear anything either. Yes, these are the kind of evenings to share.

A beautiful sonnet, indeed, Susan. Classical, in the finest sense of the word. :) Gershon

The arrival of whippoorwill is joyous and very appropriately, in its wake, your unifying feeling " I was not lonely at all" ... Beautiful ...

Often when we take the time to sit still and watch, we find the least amount of life becomes a lamppost onto our healing , Nice poem Susan
